Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault Moonlighter 2 Hardcore Mode
Optional 1.0 modifier. A dungeon death starts the journey again.
Hardcore is Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault’s optional 1.0 modifier. It shipped with the full release on 2 September 2026. It is not a new biome, not extra story, and not the same slider as Very Hard. Official launch notes are blunt: death in a dungeon comes with a much greater cost, losing your progress and starting the journey again from the beginning. Earlier Early Access previews also described relics being lost completely, in the spirit of the first Moonlighter. This page is the rule sheet so you do not turn the toggle on mid-credits by accident. Patch context sits on Version 1.0. How to fight without dying sits on Combat.
The game stays single-player. Hardcore does not open a lobby. There are no codes that refund a wipe. $29.99 still buys the same story whether the toggle is on or off.
What Hardcore actually does
On Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard, a dungeon death halves relic quality in the bag you were carrying. The town, the shop rank, Vault keys, and crafted weapons stay. The pendant still sends you home with no extra death tax. That is the standard 1.0 loop.
Hardcore is a separate switch. Digital Sun’s 1.0 recap: if you fall in the dungeon, it is back to the very beginning. Press coverage of the same notes repeats relic loss and a full restart of the journey. Treat a Hardcore death as the end of that merchant’s run, not as a slap on the wrist that still leaves Tresna upgraded. Do not expect to keep shop level 5, Vault VII, or Endless gear after a wipe. If you only wanted a harder fight, that is Very Hard, added in Blob-Life as a difficulty step above Hard. Very Hard is a slider. Hardcore is a permadeath-style mode.
You opt in. 1.0 does not force Hardcore on an Early Access save. The Updates Hub FAQ is still true: the 1.0 patch continues the same file unless you choose Hardcore or a fresh merchant.
Hardcore is not Infinite Vault
Players mash the two 1.0 endgame toys together because both arrived on the same day. They are not the same job.
- Hardcore — a death rule. Optional. Punishes a failed dungeon. No extra rooms.
- Endless Vault VII — 300,000 gold in one shop day. Lifetime gates I–V stay 10,000 / 50,000 / 120,000 / 200,000 / 500,000. Gold is not spent to flip those switches.
- Infinite / golden Vault — the repeating high-gold gauntlet that opens after the 1.0 Vault line. Cosmetics, quota, merchant flex. You can fail a golden day and still have a town.
Run Infinite Vault on a normal save if you want more gold after the credits. Run Hardcore if you want the first Moonlighter’s fear back. Mixing both is a personal dare, not a requirement. Numbers live on Vault unlocks. Story of the cube lives on Endless Vault.
When to turn it on
Leave Hardcore off until all of this is true:
- You can smash Rupture without thinking. Several bosses only drop shields when you backpack-smash purple objects. The dungeons page and Boss Rush exist so you can practice that on a file you are allowed to keep.
- You already finished the Tresna plot once. Hardcore does not add cutscenes. It deletes the file when you fail.
- You can stamp Perfect without staring at the Codex. A wipe that also throws away a 200,000-gold town is a worse joke if you still guess Silence Shell.
- You are not hunting Bloblets or Julien patches for the first time. Collection work wants a living shop, not a reset.
Turn it on when you specifically want the original Moonlighter tension: every room is a bet against the whole save. Bring potions from Eris, a finished build, and the pendant discipline from Getting Started. If a radar looks cursed, leave. Greed is how Hardcore files die.
What Hardcore does not change
Stamp math does not change. Firewood is still 42. Vault gold is still lifetime earnings, not a fee. Bomb Path, Hex, Poison Path, shop rank 5, Spark, and Endless weapons still exist. Platforms are still Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2. Game Pass is the same 1.0 build. The editions page covers Deluxe and physical boxes; none of those SKUs include a different Hardcore rule.
Hardcore is also not a fourth Boss Rush and not Greed Colosseum. Those modes still wipe a run, not a save, on standard difficulty.
If a March 2026 EA blog promised “relics can be lost completely” and the September 1.0 post promised “back to the very beginning,” play the live toggle as the harsher reading. This wiki will not invent a hidden third rule where the town survives and only the bag burns. Official 1.0 language is a restart of the journey.
Practical loadout if you insist
Play a class you already mastered. Short sword or spear is more forgiving than Heartbeat Hunter greed. Blo-Beam after a Gallery clear covers flyers. Skip Nimbus Regalia’s broken-shield window until you never miss a telegraph. Equip Julien patches that keep you alive (Tough Trader, Beating Boost, Sunglass Savior) instead of Lucky Loot. Do not open Hardcore and a fresh Bomb Path shrine on the same night.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does Hardcore delete my Moonlighter 2 save?
Official 1.0 notes: dying in a dungeon means losing your progress and starting the journey again from the beginning. It is optional. Standard difficulties only halve relic quality.
Is Hardcore the same as Very Hard?
No. Very Hard is a Blob-Life difficulty slider above Hard. Hardcore is a separate 1.0 death rule that restarts the journey.
Does 1.0 force Hardcore on Early Access saves?
No. 1.0 continues the same file. You opt into Hardcore. It is not required to see Bomb Path, shop 5, or Vault VII.
Should I turn on Hardcore for extra story?
No. Hardcore adds no extra chapters. Infinite Vault is the post-credits gold loop. Hardcore only changes what death costs.
Do stamps and Vault gold change in Hardcore?
No. Perfect Stamps and lifetime Vault totals work the same. A wipe still throws the town away; the math of a living shop does not change.
