Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault Moonlighter 2 Backpack Puzzle
Quality stars, adjacency curses, and why Aetherium must leave the bag.
Will’s backpack is a grid puzzle, not a pile. Every relic you yank from a dungeon chest has a shape, a rarity, a quality score, and often a curse that fires when you seat it. The shop only sees what survives the walk home. This page is how you stop Firewood from eating the one uncommon that would have paid for Eris.
Moonlighter 2 dropped the old “surprise upgrade in the dungeon” trick. Relics now show quality up front. Stars multiply the sale tag. Deluxe diamonds (Tomo’s research after Vault I) sell even higher. Crafting materials no longer occupy backpack tiles — Sun Eaters, Echo Links, and boss trophies do not crowd the relics you sell. Tooltips tell you whether an effect is Once Placed, Corner, Left-Right, Top-Bottom, or Next Time. Read the trigger before you drop a common in a corner “just to fill space.”
Quality, rarity, and what to keep
Rarity ladder: common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary. Legendary drops need the Luminous Pendant from Vault III (120,000 cumulative gold). Encounter color on Tomo’s radar is a hint at quality before you even open the chest. Each quality step is a slice of base value — treat extra stars as free gold, not flavor.
Keep:
- High rarity with a safe seat.
- Tool relics whose curse points at something you want to buff or convert.
- Materials (Sun Eaters, Echo Links, boss trophies). They are crafts, not tags.
Dump or use as fodder:
- Commons with hostile Once Placed burns if you have no armor ready.
- Aetherium crystals (see Aeolia). They cannot be sold; leftover crystals vanish at run end.
- Low-star junk when the grid is full and a rare is on the floor.
The relic tier list ranks which commons are tools. Shop prices tell you whether a surviving common is even worth a showcase (Silence Shell 21, Sand Fruit 31, Firewood 42).
Kalina: Burn and Armor
Kalina relics push fire. Burn destroys an unarmored target. Armor shields a neighbor from that burn. Some pieces burn a whole row; others armor adjacent tiles when placed. Firewood is the classic cheap burner — stamp 42 if it lives, kindling if you need to delete a curse you cannot seat.
Play Kalina bags like a kiln:
- Seat the relic you want to keep in a protected pocket.
- Drop armor so it covers that pocket.
- Only then place burners, aimed at fodder you are willing to lose or at pieces whose text says they gain from being burned.
Day Spike Flowers drop Sun Eaters; Night flowers drop Moon Flowers. Those materials do not need fancy seats, but they still occupy squares. If a burn is about to jump, move the flower first. Getting started is the Kalina Day onboarding; combat is how you reach the chests with HP left.
The Gallery: Shock, Overcharge, batteries
Gallery relics electrify neighbors. Shock applies Overcharge. A second shock on an Overcharged relic destroys it. Batteries and similar pieces strip Overcharge. Broken Battery (stamp 26) is junk money if it has nothing to defuse; Battery (stamp 52) is a tool.
Never chain three shockers in a line unless the middle one is a battery or a relic that wants to pop. Park batteries on a side until you have an Overcharged epic you intend to keep, then slide the battery in. Exhibition Wing and Treasury Halls use the same rules with different shapes — see dungeons.
Aeolia: Petrify, Aetherium, dolls
Petrify converts a relic into Aetherium of the same rarity. Absorb effects eat crystals and pour their quality into a survivor. Aetherium left in the bag at the end of the run is destroyed. Convert, absorb, or leave the crystal on the dungeon floor. Do not walk into Tresna with a pretty blue rock and expect a tag.
Doll transformations are Aeolia’s other bag trick: certain dolls change Will or rewrite nearby dolls when seated. Soldier dolls, prince dolls, and related pieces want rows and corners called out in their text. If you are learning the dimension, petrify cheap Lost Hooks (stamp 37 if they live as hooks, worthless as leftover crystal) into absorb food instead of gambling a full doll engine on run one.
Placement grammar and expanding the grid
Corners multiply. Extra slots create extra corners, which is why the first backpack upgrades feel stronger than “one more square.” A bag vendor appears on ? rooms; after you meet him he sets up in Tresna and sells slots for rising gold (later rows also ask for boss materials). Buy early slots. A single extra rare per run pays the fee.
Left-right and top-bottom triggers care about the current rectangle. If you expand a row mid-run, old edge pieces may no longer be edges. Re-check curses after every purchase you make during a run, and after every smash-and-reseat.
Home / Back to Tresna effects fire when you pendant out. Point those at the relics you refuse to lose to a bad last room. Death halves quality on whatever is still in the grid — another reason to send a legendary home early if the radar looks like a massacre.
Smash, bosses, and the shop door
The backpack is also a weapon. When an enemy Ruptures (purple glow, roughly half HP), smash them off a ledge or into a wall. Several bosses only drop their shield after you smash ruptured orbs back at them. A tidy bag does not stop the smash; an empty tutorial bag still swings. Practice in Kalina so Herald is not your first real smash exam. Details sit in combat.
When you do reach the door, seat priced stock for shopkeeping and leave materials for Andrei, Eris, Babyl, and Nou. The Endless Vault keys on vault unlocks care about the gold those seats become, not how clever the grid looked. Julien’s patches (after Vault II) can raise found quality and deluxe chance — they are bag multipliers you buy in town, listed with other faces on NPCs.
If a layout is a mess, it is legal to drop a common on the dungeon floor. The walkthrough calls out which boss materials must never be dropped. For weapon choices that make more chests happen, use weapons and builds. The Guides Hub links the rest. Version 1.0 did not replace the puzzle; it just gave you more relics to mis-seat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What happens to Aetherium left in the backpack?
It is destroyed when the run ends. Petrify a relic into Aetherium only if you will Absorb it or otherwise spend it before you return to Tresna. Crystals have no shop price.
How do Burn and Armor work in Kalina?
Burn destroys an unarmored relic. Armor protects a target from that burn. Seat keepers under armor, then place burners aimed at fodder or at relics whose text rewards being burned.
How do I stop Gallery relics from exploding?
Shock applies Overcharge. A second shock destroys an Overcharged relic. Park a Battery (or similar) to strip Overcharge from pieces you want to sell.
Should I buy backpack slots early?
Yes. Extra squares create extra corners and let you carry one more priced relic per run. Meet the bag vendor on a ? room, then buy slots in Tresna as gold allows.
Does dying affect the backpack?
On standard difficulties you keep relics but quality is halved, which cuts shop value. The pendant sends you home without that penalty. Hardcore restarts the save on dungeon death.
